Winning the App War with Cross-Platform Consistency

From Residential Systems magazine (April edition):

The first smartphone app for HAI by Leviton was developed for Windows phones in 2008, and the company’s series of app designs have run the gamut from the old Philips Pronto remote to the latest e-readers. Director of marketing Greg Rhoades said that adapting to a variety of interfaces has been a huge challenge.

“Before, we would create one interface design, and we knew exactly where it would go–our 3.9-inch touchscreen,” he explained. “We knew the exact constraints for resolutions and the physical capabilities of the hardware. Now, everything has to be adaptive, whether you’re using the app on the iPad mini, a full iPad, or an iPod touch, it should have a similar, yet scaled, appearance.”

Rhoades, from HAI by Leviton, said that the biggest outside influence is the mere ubiquity of apps in the world. “Now, everyone has a touchscreen in their car dashboard, in their pocket, in their purse, on their TV remote,” he said. “Consumers now expect a dynamic design with complete functionality and have plenty of comparisons around them 24/7.”

HAI by Leviton Now Shipping KNX Gateway

HAI by Leviton announced today the launch of its KNX Gateway, an interface allowing HAI by Leviton’s Omni and Lumina Ethernet-based controllers to communicate with and control KNX devices through KNX’s standardized network communications BUS protocol. Lighting devices, temperature and energy management, motors for window coverings, shades, shutters and more are among the many KNX devices that can be controlled in homes and businesses from an HAI by Leviton interface or automated via controller programming.

Automate Your Music: Auto-Time Out after X Minutes

An HAI by Leviton customer recently wondered, "I use a motion detector in my bathroom to turn on the audio zone.  Can I set this to automatically time out after a certain period of time?"

YES!  Our Director of Technical Services explains in detail below, you can time-out by second, minute, or hour.  Also, establish a "User Setting" so that you can adjust the duration of audio from your iPhone or Touchscreen at any time!

Here's how:

You will need to use a Flag and a Button (or two) also.  Use the Flag to set the duration and use the Button(s) to manually or programmatically turn the Audio Zone on/off.

First, name a Flag (e.g. BR Flag).  Second, name the Buttons (e.g. BR Audio On and BR Audio Off).  Third, name the Audio Zone (e.g. Bedroom).

Next, create the following programming:

WHEN BR Audio On
            THEN Bedroom AUDIO ON
            THEN BR Flag ON FOR 20 MINUTES

WHEN BR Flag Off
            THEN Bedroom AUDIO OFF

WHEN BR Audio Off
            THEN BR Flag OFF

Now when you run the “BR Audio On” User Button, the bedroom audio will come on for the duration that is set by the “BR Audio” Flag.  When you run the “BR Audio Off” User Button, the bedroom audio will turn off.

To make this even more functional, you can add a User Setting to manually control the duration.  You will need to name a User Setting (e.g. BR Audio Timer) and configure the Setting Type to “Duration”.  Then, change the first program block as follows:

WHEN BR Audio On
            THEN Bedroom AUDIO ON
            THEN BR Flag ON FOR BR Audio Timer

You can manually or programmatically set the duration (i.e. BR Audio Timer) to: indefinitely (don’t turn off), 1-99 seconds (turn off in this many seconds), 1-99 minutes (turn off in this many minutes, or 1-18 hours (turn off in this many hours).


HAI by Leviton Releases Controller Firmware 3.11

HAI by Leviton released Version 3.11 Firmware for the OmniPro II, Omni IIe, Omni LTe, Lumina Pro, and Lumina.  Check out the chart below to see what features were added with each firmware update!  What are you missing out on?

Need to update your firmware?  If it's a non-flash board (pre 02/08), then you need to secure the latest firmware upgrade chip.  If you have a newer board, it is capable of remotely upgrading.  View this Knowledge Base article to find out how!
